ABOUT DAVID RAVEN

My dreams were born in a little Georgia town called Waycross where I fell in love with comics, wrestling and rock stars. I started out trying to create comic books, realizing that I needed to be a storyteller and forget illustrating. I first attempted to write horror, drawing from Stephen King, Robert McCammon and Clive Barker.

My true obsession was rock music and the magic of superheroes. I heard about metal bands rumored to worship the devil and read about the occult and witchcraft. Spells, psychics, tarot card readings, and dark sexuality became of high interest to me.

“Magic and metal became the core of my creative drive.”

I started reading Hit Parader, Cream, and Rolling Stone magazine in my lust for info on my favorite rock bands. I read biographies and record reviews. At one point I thought I wanted to become a music critic, but my love was storytelling. In my books you’ll see references to metal bands like Black Veil Brides, Opeth and Arch Angel to art rock seventies band like Jethro Tull or Emerson Lake and Palmer and eighties bands like Queensryche or TNT. Everyone should know I’m a big fan of shredder god metal like Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen. Oh and don’t let me forget to mention my love for seventies glam rock like Queen. Oh I almost forgot KISS heaven forbid! My tastes in rock are eclectic, embracing sex appeal, theatricality, songwriting and virtuosity. I considered all this when I was creating my dream band Queen’s Fury, coming up in the first book of the series Angel Hunt.

Anyway, I discovered urban fantasy novels while experiencing the club scene in Atlanta. I read Laurel K. Hamilton, Lilith Saintcrow, Poppy Z. Brite, Caitlin R. Keirnan and Kim Harrison etc. Rob Zombie horror movies and classic stuff like The Crow and Underworld plus seedy indie movies really influenced me. Anyway, it dawned on me I could fuse magic, the urban club life and metal music to create my Rock God series. I could put together the ultimate urban sex soap opera and write about an antihero rock singer surrounded by a fun sexy trio of demon hunters living a double life as Atlanta Midtown strippers.

Now all my influences are coming to life in the prequel Bonding Weekend and the upcoming Rock God series. I’m writing like mad while I wait tables. Hey this is my idea of the American Dream.
